This event will bring together councillors, grass root activists and local authority officers who are focussed on the need to maintain and rebuild balanced communities. The Nottingham Action Group will be hosting a meeting of the National HMO Lobby and CCBC and Lobby participants will share the morning's core sessions before convening for separate afternoon sessions, and then reconvening for a final joint session before the end of the day.
The day will concentrate on the effects on neighbourhoods of large numbers of students and student housing. However, it will also aim to take stock of the impact of the Housing Act 2004 with an assessment of what it has achieved and what it might be expected to achieve in the future. The results of the growing debate to give councils greater powers to control and plan housing through changes in planning legislation is another key issue for discussion. Finally, it will look at good practice and at recent developments in areas where management of environmental issues such as waste, litter, noise and car parking is important. Examples will be given of the uses of accreditation, transport policy, waste and litter and noise control.
The day will give opportunities for councillors, local activists, the Government and MPs to voice what will undoubtedly be a variety of views and this, together with an agenda that brings together key players, all of whom are committed to continuing development and strengthening of the concept of ‘balanced community’, should provide a stimulating day for everyone interested and involved in these issues.
Speakers include: Dr. Darren Smith, Reader in Geography at the University of Brighton, Martin Blakey, Chief Executive of UNIPOL, Dr. Roberta-Blackman Woods, MP for Durham and Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Balanced and Sustainable Communities, Dr. Richard Tyler, Co-ordinator of the National HMO Lobby, Councillor Alan Clark, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Regeneration Nottingham, and Maya Fletcher, Co-ordinator of the Nottingham Action Group on HMOs.
