This article about 'student ghettos' has come about as a result of work being done by our colleagues in Loughborough. They have engaged their local MP and, through him, a visit to Loughborough was arranged for Philip Woolas (minister with responsibility for communities, etc.). He was taken for a tour of the affected areas in Loughborough and was clearly impressed by what Loughborough residents showed him. We have spoken with their organizers and it seems that a meeting with Yvette Cooper (Housing and Planning) is being arranged. The Evening Post article is based on a report that appeared in Hansard and also on stories that have already appeared in the Evening Post.

As a result of an audio diary we did for Radio Nottingham just before Christmas we have made contact with residents in Beeston, including those who live in the immediate vicinity of the Broadgate Park 'village' which is featured in one of the articles. Their experiences raise a number of issues about the siting and management of purpose built accommodation and how it affects residential neighoburhoods in its vicinity. The Broadgate Park situation appears to be far from ideal. It is being compounded by the fact that the University and its partner in the venture (UPP) seem to be prepared to 'pass the buck' from one to the other. It is further complicated because part of the site lies in the City and part in Broxtowe.

BBC Radio Nottingham are revisiting studentification, stimulated by a series of letters in the Beeston Express where residents have been venting their anger about what's happening in Beeston, mostly the problems being experienced by people living in the general area of the 2,000-bed purpose build at Broadgate Park. They've been looking for some-one to do a 10-day audio diary about what it's like to live in one of our neighbourhoods, etc. They couldn't find anyone to do the job in Beeston or anywhere else.
