Planning Policies (with Karen Shaw, Local Development Framework Manager, Nottingham City Council)
This section of the workshop focussed on planning documents and planning policy. It gave a brief introduction to the new planning system and highlighted that planning policy is a key consideration in the determination of planning applications. It showed how residents (either as individuals or as members of community/neighbourhood groups) can get involved in the preparation of future planning policy documents. Topics covered were:

  • Building Balanced Communities Supplementary Planning Document – where we are and how we got here
  • Brief ‘Beginners Guide to the New Planning System’ – how you can get involved and the new planning documents you should watch out for:

                   * Statement of Community Involvement
                   * City-wide Core Strategy
                   * Site Specific Allocations Document

  • Future planning policy on student housing

Planning Practicalities (with Phil Shaw, Principal Planning Officer, Nottingham City Council).
The second part of the workshop concentrated on the submission of planning applications, the subsequent consultation process and the enforcement system. It gave information on how people can get involved in the consideration of applications for planning permission. This session covered:

  • How to submit a planning application
  • What needs planning permission?
  • The consultation and notification process
  • The link between proposals and policy
  • Enforcement
