UUK Research Report Open Meeting with Dr Darren Smith

18th January 2006.

The Nottingham Action Group invited Dr. Smith to come to Nottingham on the 18 January so that he could talk about his research findings and the final UUK Report which, it had been anticipated, would have been published at the end of 2005. However, as it turned out, the Report had been delayed and its formal launch at a one-day conference did not take place until after Dr. Smith’s visit to Nottingham. However, although this did put some restrictions of what he was able to talk about in advance of the launch, he was still able to discuss his research findings and recommendations at two meetings. The first was with representatives of the groups which had contributed to the Student Housing Action Plan. The second was an open, evening meeting, specifically arranged so that residents could attend. This meeting developed into a workshop-type session in which residents talked about their emotional reactions to and experiences of studentification issues, as well as their perceptions of when and how  their own, individual neighbourhoods had changed from being resident-based to ‘student areas’, the so-called and now much discussed ‘tipping point’. Although this part of Dr. Smith’s visit had not been planned, feedback indicated that residents had very much appreciated the opportunity to not only hear what Dr. Smith had to say, but to speak openly and freely. For his part, Dr. Smith felt he had been given new perspectives on studentification and had gathered much useful data for what he hopes will be future research.
